Why Network Identity Becomes a Bottleneck in AWS

Picture a playground with one door to get in and one big box for all the toys. This is perfect when one big group of children plays together. They all use the same door and share the toy box.

Now, that big group splits into many small groups of children. Each small group wants its own door (to feel safe and private) and its own small box (to keep their special toys separate). But there is no more room for extra doors or boxes at the playground!

The playground still works fine. It just can’t fit doors and boxes for so many small groups. The problem? The small groups need to stay separate; they have different games, different rules (like “no running” for one group but “tag only” for another), and they don’t want to mix toys or share the door. Going back to one big group would cause fights over toys and rules!

And this is the real problem ENIs face in AWS.
An EC2 instance only has room for a small number of “doors” - traditional ENIs - and each one carries its own IP address and security rules. That works fine when you run one big application on the instance. But once you start breaking that application into many smaller pieces (like ECS tasks or EKS pods), each of those pieces wants its own “door” too.

Very quickly, you run out of ENI slots. Not because your instance is overloaded, but simply because it can’t attach any more network identities.

This is the limitation ENI trunking is designed to solve.

What Is an Elastic Network Interface (ENI)?

We have just mentioned what ENIs do, but do you know what an ENI is and the problem it solves?

When you run applications in the AWS cloud, you often rely on EC2 instances. For those instances to be useful, they must be able to communicate with other services - databases, load balancers, APIs, or even other instances.

That communication involves two directions:

• Sending requests out to other services.
• Receiving responses back from them.

To make this possible, each instance needs three things:

• An IP address: A unique number (like 192.168.1.1) that works like a home address. It tells other resources where to deliver messages.
• Security rules (via security groups): Permissions that decide what traffic is allowed in or out. Think of it as a gatekeeper who decides who can enter and who cannot.
• A subnet connection: The path into and out of the Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), so the instance is part of the larger network.

In AWS, all of this is provided by an Elastic Network Interface (ENI). Without ENIs, an instance would be cut off, unable to talk to anything else. With ENIs, it becomes a connected part of the system.

ENI Limits and Their Impact on ECS and EKS Networking Models

Every EC2 instance type has a fixed limit on the number of Elastic Network Interfaces (ENIs) it can support. These limits vary by instance family and size, and in many cases are surprisingly small. Under normal circumstances this isn’t an issue—traditional workloads rarely need more than one or two ENIs per instance.

However, the relevance of ENI limits becomes much clearer when you introduce container‑orchestrated environments such as Amazon ECS and Amazon EKS.

Why Containers Stress ENI Limits

In Amazon ECS (when using awsvpc networking) and Amazon EKS (via the VPC CNI plugin), AWS follows a deliberate design philosophy:
each task (ECS) or pod (EKS) is treated as a first-class citizen in the VPC.

This means:

• Every task/pod receives its own IP address.
• It attaches to the VPC directly through an ENI.
• Security is simplified because each workload has its own security rules.
• Routing becomes more intuitive—each workload is directly reachable like a small VM.

This design significantly improves isolation, observability, and security… but it comes with a real architectural cost.

The Real Bottleneck: Per-Instance ENI Limits

Because each task or pod requires an ENI (or at least an IP on an ENI), the ENI limit of the underlying EC2 instance becomes a hard upper bound on how many workloads can be scheduled onto that node.

This leads to a common scenario:

• CPU and memory remain available
• But the scheduler cannot place new tasks/pods
• Because no ENIs or IPs are left

This isn’t an error condition—it’s the system working as designed. ENI limits are enforced for good reasons, including:

• Hardware offload capabilities of the underlying NIC
• Kernel data structure constraints
• Predictable performance and isolation guarantees

The result is that ENIs become a critical scalability dimension for ECS and EKS clusters running awsvpc/VPC CNI networking. You can hit networking limits long before you hit compute or memory limits.

What Happens When You Hit ENI Limits

When an instance runs out of ENIs, the symptoms can be confusing if you don’t know what’s happening underneath. In ECS, tasks stay stuck in PENDING even though the instance looks healthy. In EKS, pods fail to schedule and the VPC CNI plugin reports IP or ENI errors. At first glance it feels like a compute problem, but CPU and memory still have plenty of room.

A common reaction is to add more instances. This works, but it only hides the real issue. You end up paying for more nodes that sit mostly idle because each one can host only a small number of network identities. The cluster scales, but inefficiently, and you spend more money just to work around ENI limits instead of solving the actual constraint.

What ENI Trunking Actually Does

ENI trunking is AWS’s way of removing the ENI limit on an instance without changing how networking works for your tasks or pods.

Here’s the idea:

• The instance gets one main network interface called a trunk ENI.
• Under that trunk, AWS attaches many branch ENIs.
• Each branch ENI still has:
  • its own IP address
  • its own security group rules
• But branch ENIs do not count toward the small ENI‑per‑instance limit.

Nothing about network isolation changes. From the VPC’s point of view, each branch ENI is still a separate network identity. The only thing that changes is how they are connected to the instance.

A simple picture:

• Trunk ENI = the highway
• Branch ENIs = the lanes
• Each lane has its own traffic, but they all use the same highway.

With this setup, an instance can host many more tasks or pods—as long as it still has CPU, memory, and IP addresses available.

Why ENI Trunking Matters in Production

ENI trunking directly solves the problem of running out of network identities on an instance.

Here’s why it matters:

• Higher task/pod density: You can run far more ECS tasks or EKS pods on a single instance because branch ENIs don’t use up attachment slots.
• Lower cost: You no longer need to add extra instances just to get more ENIs. Your cluster uses fewer nodes and wastes less capacity.
• Simpler operations: All branch ENIs sit under one trunk ENI, which reduces the noise and complexity of managing many interfaces directly on the instance.

What ENI Trunking Does Not Solve

It’s important to be clear about the limits of ENI trunking. It fixes one problem, but not all problems.

Trunking does not remove physical limits on the instance:

• All traffic still goes through the same instance and the same networking stack.
• CPU, memory, and bandwidth limits still apply.
• If you run too many heavy or noisy workloads on one node, you can still get latency, drops, or messy debugging.

ENI trunking only solves the ENI attachment limit.
It lets you place more tasks or pods on an instance, but it does not make the instance stronger or faster. It simply makes higher density possible, not automatically safe.

How ECS and EKS Solve the Density Problem

Both ECS and EKS have ways to attach more network identities to a single instance, but they go about it in different ways.

• ECS (ENI Trunking): This is the literal “trunk and branch” model. The EC2 instance owns one trunk ENI (the highway), and as ECS adds tasks, it plugs in branch ENIs (the lanes). ECS handles the setup, but the instance still does all the actual work of moving packets and following resource limits. ENI trunking is an ECS‑only feature and does not exist for EKS.

• EKS (Prefix Delegation and CNI options): EKS usually skips the trunking model and uses Prefix Delegation or alternative CNIs (such as Cilium or Calico). Instead of giving an ENI one single IP address, the VPC CNI plugin assigns a whole block of IP addresses (a prefix) to an existing ENI. This lets dozens of pods get their own unique IP address without needing a brand‑new ENI slot for every single one. Other CNIs may avoid per‑pod ENIs entirely by using overlay or eBPF‑based networking. In all cases, EKS does not use ENI trunking; it relies on IP‑management and CNI‑level tricks instead.

A Real-World Example: Cost and Density Trade-offs

Imagine you’re running a backend API made up of many small ECS tasks.

• Without trunking: You may need dozens of EC2 instances just to get enough ENIs, even though each instance is mostly idle. The limit isn’t CPU or memory — it’s the number of ENIs the instance can attach.
• With trunking: The same workload can often run on far fewer instances because branch ENIs no longer count toward the instance’s ENI limit. This reduces cost and makes the cluster easier to manage.

But trunking is not a free pass to pack an instance with unlimited workloads. If you place too many tasks on a single node, you can still hit other bottlenecks like CPU contention, uneven latency, or network saturation. All workloads still share the same physical resources on the instance.

Trunking solves network identity scarcity. It does not solve performance scarcity. Misunderstanding that difference is where real problems begin.

What Have We Learned So Far?

Here’s the full picture of ENIs, limits, and trunking - all in one place:

• ENIs are the basic network identities in AWS
  They provide an IP address, security groups, and a subnet connection. Every ECS task or EKS pod needs one.
• Container platforms hit ENI limits fast
  ECS tasks and EKS pods get their own IP and behave like standalone network participants. This is great for isolation, but it means a node can hit the ENI cap long before it runs out of CPU or memory.
• ENI limits are strict and tied to instance type
  Many EC2 instances can only attach a handful of ENIs. Once those are used up, no new tasks or pods can be scheduled — even if the instance is mostly idle.
• Symptoms look like compute problems, but they’re not
  ECS tasks stay in PENDING, and EKS pods fail to schedule. Adding more nodes “fixes” it temporarily, but wastes money because you’re scaling only to get more ENI slots.
• Trunking and Prefixes remove the attachment bottleneck
  Whether it’s an ECS “branch” (under a trunk ENI) or an EKS “prefix” (multiple IPs on an existing ENI), these extra network identities do not increase the instance’s ENI‑attachment count. This is what finally allows you to use all your CPU and memory.
• This boosts density and lowers cost
  You can run many more tasks or pods per node, reducing wasted compute and unnecessary node counts.
• But trunking does not increase performance
  All traffic still goes through the same instance, the same network interface, and the same kernel networking stack. CPU, memory, and bandwidth limits do not change.
• You must still choose safe workload density
  Trunking solves identity scarcity, not resource scarcity. Too many noisy workloads on a single node will still cause latency, packet drops, or debugging headaches.
• The tech is transparent, but the method depends on the service
  ECS uses Trunking to plug in branch ENIs for tasks; EKS uses Prefix Delegation or alternative CNIs to assign blocks of IPs to pods. In both systems, the node still does the hard work of processing traffic and enforcing real capacity limits.

Final takeaway:
ENI trunking solves the ENI attachment problem - nothing more.
It gives you space to scale, but you still need to respect CPU, memory, bandwidth, and operational safety when deciding how densely to pack workloads.
